So I got a quote back from the dealership, yep she is royally fucked. $5000 to replace the block on a car I still owe $8000 on. I am so lost and don't know what to do.

Warranty?

What happened?
Year/model? Can you source a used motor somewhere and have an independent mechanic throw it in for you? Would certainly be cheaper?

LS SWAP!

Sorry that had to happen. You could always finish paying it off, and then part it out, or in the meantime, hope that something good happens.

$5000!!!!
I am guessing this is mid 2000's Impreza (WRX or no?). This is like the crap Ford tried to pull on me when my transmission went out. $5000 for a new trans plus $2700 in labor. I went to LKQ and got a warrantied to be good transmission for $1800 and had the dealer do the work (since my trans was already out and apart).

Do it yourself. Get a junkyard motor, rip yours out, salvage what you can from yours, and move on. Estimate ~1500-2000 depending on if you need to rent extra tools. I recommend enlisting help. Lots of help. It isn't fun if you don't have a fully stocked repair shop.

Ouch. Can you pull an engine out of a wrecked Impreza that is in a scrap yard and install it in your car?

how did u manage to sling a rod on a base impreza?
time to get a toolkit and do an engine swap yourself. and before you say you're not mechanically inclined, what's the worst that could happen? the old engine is already toast.

http://www.lkqcorp.com/us/en/search-i…
Random search from random zip in CO (I have no idea where you are) a non turbo motor for $1650. (complete motor) so no rebuilding just a simple swap, est 10 hrs of labor ($110 high estimate) = $1100.
1650+1100 = $2750...

what they said
Source a used motor with a warranty and low miles for $1k-ish, and install it yourself/with friends. Subarus are pie to work on, a good groupe of guys can have the engine swapped in half a day in a driveway/street/parking lot.
